What makes a great Savile Row bespoke or made to measure suit?…Well, quite a lot of things but obviously a good cloth is the bedrock of how your new suit will turn out. I wrote a little about cloth earlier but this time we’re going into the heart of the cloth business to give you a small insight as to why English, Huddersfield Worsted, rightly owns its reputation as the finest cloth in the world. A bold statement I know but Dugdale Bros, founded in 1896 is a name which is indelibly imprinted on my mind. Dugdale’s cathedral like premises at number 5 Northumberland Street, Huddersfield is the address of the first cloth merchant I visited and dealt with as an apprentice at Redmayne. At the time, Mr Charnock senior was in charge and Robert was just a junior like me in the trade.
A few years have passed since then and even though Savile Row tailors, along with many business are taking a beating. We’re both still here and looking forward to better times ahead. It was a delight to drop in and see friends last week and I’d like to thank Robert and all of the team for their kind and welcoming hospitality. With the introductions out of the way, I’ll stop my chatter and let my simple record of the day, filmed on an iphone do all the talking. I’m not in the movie business so forgive the quality of the production, though I simply hope you enjoy this unscripted look inside one of the world’s finest cloth merchants. Thank you for dropping by.
